The Denver Reservoir Irrigation Company was formed in 1907 to construct the Standley Lake Dam on the North Platte River, about nine miles northwest of Denver, Colorado. In the early 1900s, the building of irrigation systems was a major industry in northeastern Colorado, and many of the large irrigation systems were the result of joint operations between several companies. The Denver Reservoir Irrigation Company was formed in 1902 as a construction subsidiary of the Framers Reservoir and Irrigation Company, which was formed by Joseph Standley, Milton Smith, and Thomas B. Croke. Joseph Standley was a Colorado pioneer, who owned mines and banks in Colorado, and Milton Smith was one of Denver’s leading attorneys,
specializing in mining, corporation, irrigation, and insurance law. Thomas Croke owned a furniture store in Denver, as well as a fruit and cattle ranch; in 1911, he was elected as a Colorado state senator.
In 1902 Thomas Croke joined with Joseph A. Standley, for whom the lake is named, and Milton Smith to incorporate the Farmers Reservoir and Irrigation Company, with the purpose of constructing a system of canals and reservoirs to irrigate the farmland north of Denver. Ottawa Joseph ("O.J.") Standley, vice-president of Chicago Title and Trust, had plans to build a reservoir in the Barr Lake area. However, together with Croke, he decided to greatly enlarge the Kinnear Reservoir instead (later names Standley Lake). Initial plans called for a 100,000 acre-feet lake and a 140 foot high dam, which would have been the largest earth-filled dam in the world. These plans were revised down during construction, however, with the intention of raising the dam later to its full capacity. Construction began in 1907 and was completed in May 1912.
