Tag #29370 - Bridgeburners "First In Last Out" Steven Erikson Malazan Fallen Pathtag
I understand that this tag is, well, fairly inconsistent with the usual array offered by theMADmuseum collection. This is due to the fact that my husband and creator of theMADmuseum.com, Jason, wanted to let me have a crack at a tag that has been on my mind for some time but required a very special circumstance; glitter! I know this sounds girly, but the application and necessity of it is anything but!
I received my first adult sci-fi/fantasy novel from my father at an early age because I believe he wanted to share his love of his favorite authors with someone, and that someone happened to be me. Over the years I have sampled various authors, stuck with some stories that I probably should have long abandoned, perhaps should have given some authors a little more credit than I originally did, but in the end there are those rare few authors that actually change the way you see the world and likewise behave in it. In other words, they make you
aware
. (Sorry, George RR Martin. You are wildly entertaining, but you are not of this caliber)
From a frustrated roommate many years ago, I was given
Gardens of the Moon
by
Steven Erikson
. The complaint was that it was simply too difficult to follow the plot since the author hits the ground running and expects the reader to use their brains a little and to show some patience. I was immediately hooked! At the time, three of the expected ten books were already published and I reveled in every word and every year after that, a new book in the series was faithfully published. Yes, it’s an enormous world with characters beyond count. Sure, there are many factions, rivalries and loyalties to suss out and remember. The minutia and details
do
matter, sometimes to a point of annoyance. But the overall philosophy (Yes, this series is highly philosophical) of the series known as
A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen
carries, in my opinion, such crucial moral significance and is delivered with beautiful brutality and grace, that it has now become my measuring stick for reading material.
It is not my intent to summarize these novels for you, I only hoped to capture people’s interest and inspire them to pick up an amazing read. This is my homage to the Bridgeburners and to Steven Erikson. They were and always will be, “First in and Last Out”!
